Kei Coffee House

This long-gestating Kei Concepts cafe aims to bring Asian drinking cultures together

Having already demonstrated its prowess with everything from upscale Vietnamese to Peruvian Chifa cuisine and Italian-Japanese fusion, Kei Concepts opened a long-gestating venture in summer 2024: a gourmet coffee shop in Westminster, a block or two away from its cluster of Fountain Valley restaurants. Since then, Kei Coffee House has evolved significantly, expanding both its hours (8am to 10pm, 7 days) and menu items to offer a wider variety of food and drink options. Given its trajectory – and Kei’s expansions elsewhere – the only surprise is that second and third locations haven’t yet been announced.

From orange jam-enhanced Thai tea to melon espresso tonics and matcha toffee drinks, Kei Coffee House has canvassed and expanded upon regional beverage recipes with pretty much uniform success. Over the course of its first year, the core of the drink menu has settled into matcha-based teas, sweetened milk espresso/coffee drinks, and soda-based refreshers; fresh fruits, ground nuts, and creamy foam toppings are common. Seasonal drinks are also important, and have included butterscotch lattes, spiced apple lattes, and orange mochas – the latter particularly terrific. In summer 2025, Kei introduced Korean hotteok coffee and tea drinks with roasted sesame seeds, cinnamon, brown sugar, and walnuts, another unexpected winner.

Kei launched with excellent pastries by Gem Dining’s former pastry chef: Ideally flaky almond croissants, delicate chocolate croissants, chunky chocolate cookies, and savory beef pate chaud buns remain on the menu today. Subsequent sweet additions have included seasonal cookies, as well as trendy items including Dubai chocolate strawberries and Dole Whip-style pineapple soft serve – largely but not always to guests’ delight. Small savory dishes ranging from popcorn chicken and waffle fries to pastas and egg sandwiches are also available.

Even after a year in business, Kei Coffee House still generates long lines, offset by typically friendly Kei service and efficient drink preparation that keeps people moving quickly. That said, although the dining area is larger than many coffee shops, it’s also likely to be both closer to full and noisier than most, so if you’re looking for a quiet, cozy cafe, this won’t likely be it. But you’re almost certain to love the drinks and food, which is why we’ve returned on multiple occasions since the opening, and will continue to do so.
