Whip X Banh Mi

In Garden Grove, gemstone-like cakes and sparkling cookies join beverages and sandwiches

After Newport Beach’s Shokuh Pattiserie set a new local bar for French pastry ingredients and presentation, several competitors popped up across Orange County with similar offerings and at least somewhat different execution. Gorgeously decorated and ambitious from its opening day, Whip Dessert Cafe first opened in Huntington Beach as a Shokuh-like experience, most notably offering a handful of gloss-finished mini-cakes and neat croissants (ube, shown). But Whip also has some unique sweet treats made somewhat unusually with beef or duck fat, plus several durian and ube items, all collectively hinting at the bakery’s underpublicized Asian heritage.

After opening, Whip increased its focus on “high tea” options, offering fancy multi-layer dessert trays and drinks to groups. Critically, their drinks tend to be great. Vietnamese coffees, including pandan, egg foam, crème brûlée and ube, are as compellingly flavored and presented as at Little Saigon specialists. Whip also sells multiple teas (including a fair matcha latte), and while in Huntington Beach, added a handful of lunch items to its originally short menu.

In 2025, Whip moved and rebranded as Whip X Banh Mi, pairing its drinks and desserts with Vietnamese sandwiches. Although maps list it as being in Garden Grove, the new location is immediately next to Stanton’s Rodeo 39 Public Market – they notably are on two sides of the same plaza, rather than Whip X being inside.

Across several visits, service was always friendly, though in our experiences, dessert items were too often out of stock or quietly substituted with not-quite-right alternatives due to missing ingredients. A lemon macaron tart, for instance, arrived without its signature macaron, yet still at its full $9 price. Other items, such as improbably developed wagyu cookies or duck mousse pistachio danishes, may appear on Whip’s online menu only to be “sold out” or “not ready yet” when we arrived.

That’s a shame, as Whip can do a good job with its treats: We especially loved their sparkling rose gold champagne macarons, which are truly Ladurée-caliber, and their Whip Dolce pavlova is a delicate meringued spectacle of a dessert. Although we haven’t visited the Garden Grove location yet, our experiences at the Huntington Beach Whip were solid enough to keep us intrigued every time we were in the neighborhood, and optimistic that it will continue to evolve in its newer space.
