Turkish Kitchen
A Turkish temple to the sweet possibilities of phyllo dough opens and closes in Fountain Valley
With a single and quite nice Fountain Valley location that was notable for its prominent dessert display cases, Turkish Kitchen faced challenges from the very start. The restaurant was a temple to phyllo dough pastries, with multiple choices showing off the possibilities of multi-layered, nut-dusted, honeyed baklavas and similar desserts, as well as a nice collection of Turkish candies. If you like Mediterranean or Middle Eastern sweets, it was almost impossible to go wrong here.
Turkish Kitchen’s desserts still live in our memories as amazing examples of both the basics – multiple forms of baklava and a nice shredded dough kadayif – and the unfamiliar, including the colorful and amazing pomegranate/nut pudding Noah’s Ark. We’ve visited many Orange County bakeries, including most of the well-known ones in Little Arabia, and no one matched Turkish Kitchen’s visual appeal.
Unfortunately, Turkish Kitchen’s menu was mostly savory items, and everything we tried – kebabs, grape leaves, kibbeh, and doner – was only fine, not memorable. Moreover, the service wasn’t fantastic: Instead of what could have been a Willy Wonka-like experience for visitors discovering all of the Turkish treats, the person behind the counter seemed mostly indifferent to our interest.
Turkish Kitchen quietly closed in 2024. We hope its pastry chef gets the opportunity to display their talents elsewhere in the area.
