Taty’s Specialty Coffee & Tea
An established Vietnamese tea and coffee chain plants seeds in two Little Saigon loctions
A brief bubble of local interest brought us to Taty’s Specialty Coffee & Tea, a small but cute Westminster shop mixing some of the best elements of coffee bar Phin Smith, numerous boba tea places, and Instagram favorite drink and dessert maker The Vintage 1979. While Taty’s advertises itself as having been open since 1980, that date actually refers to its parent company’s founding in Vietnam under the name Cafe Tung, later Vy Tung Coffee. Taty’s opened its Westminster location in 2022, and is opening a Garden Grove store in late 2024.
Their large collection of Vietnamese coffee drinks includes rose, lavender, ube and charcoal options, while fruit and milk teas run the gamut, and a “deep blue ocean” drink does solo duty as a gorgeous soda. Macarons, brownies, and small slices of cake were all available at inexpensive prices during the Westminster store’s early days, but appear to have been removed from sale – we couldn’t get excited enough about them to order any before that happened.
While a customized drink (charcoal latte with egg foam) was excellent, and their Assam Black Milk Tea was pretty good, Taty’s eye-popping deep blue ocean turned out to be around 50% sweet syrup and 50% blueberry soda. (The menu currently lists it as containing lemonade, tea, candied orange and passionfruit jelly.)
Beyond coffees and teas, Taty’s currently offers a collection of deep fried appetizers – three types of fries, onion rings, egg rolls, fried chicken, calamari, fish balls, and shrimp tempura – as well as smoothies including ingredients such as cheesecake and creme brulee. Although we haven’t come back for a second visit, we may visit their soon-to-be-opened location in Garden Grove, and if so, we’ll update this with additional details.
