Singapore’s Banana Leaf

One of relatively few SoCal options for Singaporean food is inside LA's Original Farmers Market

Located at The Original Farmers Market in Los Angeles, Singapore’s Banana Leaf offers guests an opportunity to sample Singaporean food – one of the world’s great cuisines, though it’s unfortunately far more difficult to find in Orange County. Fusing flavors and ingredients common in Chinese, Indian, and Thai dishes, Singaporean cuisine is its own offshoot of these influences, like Malaysian and Indonesian.

Operating since 2001, Singapore’s Banana Leaf wouldn’t be out of place in a Singaporean hawker center, one of the country’s many affordable mega food courts. It offers mee goreng noodles, Indo-style (egg- and satay-topped) nasi goreng rice, fish curry, satay, curry puffs, chendol dessert, and mango refresher drinks.

As excited as we were to finally discover a dedicated Singaporean restaurant within driving distance of Orange County, almost everything we tried at Banana Leaf looked more authentically Singaporean than it tasted: Entrees had mild flavors with too little punch and depth. The curry puff and perfectly marinated and peanut sauced beef/chicken satays were solid, though.

We haven’t had a great desire to return to Banana Leaf after our initial visit. The closest alternative in Orange County is Seasons Kitchen USA in Anaheim.
