Rou Plus More
Via Fantuan, a ghost kitchen serving regional Chinese delicacies
Despite having never seen them on earlier trips to Beijing, Shanghai, or Hong Kong, rou jia mo “Chinese hamburgers” from Shaanxi hit our radars after the 2010 opening of China Poblano in Las Vegas – and instantly became a favorite anywhere we found them. During the pandemic, we discovered Rou Plus More, a restaurant offering peppery beef, spicy chicken, and cumin lamb versions of the burger, as well as “secret Xi’an Liangpi” noodle and rice dishes with similar meat choices. Rou Plus More operated on Fantuan as a delivery service, and appears to have been a ghost kitchen; it has since disappeared without a trace.
We ordered a lot, and nothing was particularly good. The buns were like flat, bland and untoasted English muffins with meat and onions inside – barely even the McDonalds equivalent of a good rou jia mo, but at much higher prices. While the thick noodles appeared to have been hand-cut, and tasted fine, the dishes were delivered from Rou Plus More in DIY fashion without any assembly instructions. This wasn’t a great place to sample these Chinese delicacies; those seeking similar options today would be better off considering Noodle Nest/Dun Huang or Crispy Rougamo instead.
