OC 7$ Seafood Restaurant
This OC Oc restaurant offered $7 snails, seven sauces, and lots of inexpensive seafood before closing
In Orange County’s Little Saigon neighborhood, there are surprisingly big differences between the letters “OC” and “Ốc,” as well as “Ốc 7” and “Ốc 7$.” The same letters that abbreviate Orange County in uppercase mean “snail” when written with the accent mark in Vietnamese, so a seafood restaurant named “Ốc 7$” suggests that $7 snails – a French and Vietnamese delicacy – are going to be available.
For a couple of years, they were, and in 10 different preparations at the same low $7 price, along with $7 blood clams, mussels, and scallops. But at some point after inflation rocked the entire restaurant industry, that pricing disappeared, and Ốc 7$ became OC 7 Seafood Restaurant. The new pitch was that its seafood could be prepared with seven different sauces.
On our visit, we tried grilled butter oysters (super tender and richly sauced), a whole grilled eel with spicy Muoi Ot sauce (great flavor, terribly dry and boney), spicy blood clams and crab sate (both cool!), Hong Kong-style stir fried baby squid (oily but garlicky and delicious), small clams steamed with lemongrass (healthier), and Italian sodas in apple, raspberry, and lychee flavors (all good). The service was quick, the food was quite good, and the pricetag – under $90 for enough seafood and drinks to fill three people – was great.
Throughout 2023, OC 7 Seafood Restaurant struggled with quality control, portion sizes, pricing, and service, then closed. Popular long-time competitor Oc & Lau remains open for those seeing similar experiences.
