Mega Mart

In La Habra, this chain supermarket purports to be more authentically Korean than H Mart

Despite its sometimes low prices, Amazon Fresh was an utterly charmless supermarket, using its warehouse-like aisles at least as much to fulfill online orders as accommodate actual shoppers. When Amazon abruptly closed the chain in early 2026, it created plaza vacancies for other retailers, notably including South Korea’s Mega Mart (also styled MEGAMART). Founded in 1995, Mega Mart opened its first U.S. store in 2010, then expanded to Orange County with a October 2026 opening in La Habra. Claimed by some to be more authentically Korean in execution than older U.S.-based rival H Mart, Mega Mart turns out to be owned by packaged food maker Nongshim, and offers a wide variety of that company’s ramen and snack items. It also sells fresh produce, meats, seafood, bakery and deli items – including some in-house prepared foods – alongside smaller collections of Korean cosmetics, OTC pharmaceuticals, food storage products, and home essentials.

Though the early Mega Mart experience is nearly as joyless as Amazon’s was – and nowhere near as fun to visit as any H Mart – it’s large, clean, and clearly full of potential. Customers may like the rice flour-based bakery with semi-luxurious cake designs, meat cases with Berkshire and sakura pork, imported Korean grapes, chestnuts, and vegetables, plus numerous aisles of packaged goods; however, its small variety of fresh banchan and total lack of beer, soju, or other alcoholic products will likely need to be remedied. There’s also an Event section at the store’s front, initially focused on Pepero snacks, which may evolve with future promotions. As of when we stopped in at the start of November 2026, we didn’t feel a need to go back for a second visit, but we’ll be interested to see whether and how the store evolves over time.
