London Chippy
At Irvine's Trade Food Hall, traditional British-style fish and chips – plus other deep-fried proteins
Virtually all of the vendors inside Irvine’s Trade Food Hall are narrowly focused on specific types of food – Thai noodles, Japanese rice balls, and Turkish kababs, to name a few – but London Chippy is one of the most focused, promising and delivering authentic British-style deep-fried fish and chips. A standard order ($16) includes two pieces of fried cod atop a bed of steak-cut french fries with tartar sauce on the side and malt vinegar at the ordering counter. curry sauce ($4), extra tartar ($0.65), and mushy peas ($7) are available as extras, with cole slaw ($5), onion rings ($6), garlic fries ($9), salads ($5-$18), and chicken tender sliders ($12 for 3) as sides or alternatives.
While there are a few ways to customize the main attraction, including adding deep-fried shrimp (+$3) or chicken (+$5) to the plate of fish and french fries, or turning either the fish or shrimp into a poboy-style sandwich ($17-18), the classic dish is fairly large and filling. Golden, crispy batter surrounds the tender, lightly flaky white fish, arriving so hot that you’ll probably want to give it a few minutes to settle – or dip sliced pieces into one of the sauces to cool it down. While the fish isn’t particularly salty, the batter is both tasty and absorbent enough to enjoy with or without modification, though every bite we took of the fish was oily. An included lemon wedge can be used to lightly punch up the sourness without resorting to vinegar.
The chips – thick, steak-cut, and lightly seasoned with garlic salt – are good, too, though whether you’ll prefer them to thinner-cut fries is a matter of personal preference. Because of their thickness and gentle seasoning, the cores have no shortage of potato flavor, which you’ll taste over the salt without an issue. Those inclined to soak their meals in vinegar will find the fish and chips both strong enough to resist wilting.
Drinks are cheap but limited. On our visit, the soda fountain was out of order, and the only options were refrigerated cans. But at $2.50 each, they’re some of the most affordable drinks at Trade, and a good investment: you’ll likely want something effervescent to wash the oil down between bites.
We’re not huge fish and chips buffs, but when we were in the mood, London Chippy’s versions hit the spot. If we return in the future for a sandwich or salad, we’ll update this article with the details.
