K Town Crab House

Live sea urchin, raw crab, and other delights at this established Koreatown seafood house

Alternately known as Crab House or K Town Crab House, this LA restaurant offers visually stunning and perfectly fresh sea urchin in your choice of sizes – each paired with multiple types of roe, seaweed, and rice – and is also known for soy-marinated raw crabs, sold in three sizes and price points. Their largest and most expensive ($40) size, shown in our photos, includes enough cool, salted crabmeat for two people to share along with other dishes. It’s also possible to have a smaller raw crab experience here at a lower price ($30) than LA’s better-known raw crab destination Soban.

There are other compelling raw seafood options at Crab House, including scallops, prawns, and abalone (offered on one plate for $40) and some tasty banchan. The prices look high at first – and are, in an absolute sense – but Crab House tries to make a meal out of whatever raw items you order, suggesting you mix bits of cold marinated seafood into a bowl with hot rice and seaweed salad.

In addition to the basic banchan, we unexpectedly received a large spicy salmon head at what we thought was the end of our meal, guaranteeing we wouldn’t leave hungry. That made up for the fact that Soban includes a much larger selection of banchan than Crab House (12 versus 4) and has a somewhat better soy marinade for the crab. Depending on what matters to you, the choice between these options should be pretty straighforward – for us, the sea urchin was really the draw here.

Beyond the costs of the meal, also be prepared to pay $3 for DIY “valet” parking immediately in front of the restaurant. The good news is that parking is readily available here, unlike at Soban where metered spaces may be occupied if you arrive at prime dining hours.
