Food R Drink

In Santa Ana, a small restaurant with central Vietnamese dishes and Cajun ambitions

Many of the Vietnamese restaurants we’ve reviewed in Orange County’s Little Saigon sit somewhere in the range of good to great by local standards – or excellent by national ones. Opened on Westminster Avenue in Santa Ana around the end of May 2025, Food R Drink is just down the street from Little Saigon, and not quite up to rivals’ standards except in pricing.

A two-page, double-sided menu includes an appealing collection of central Vietnamese dishes spanning appetizers, breakfast items (and dim sum), soups, rice, noodles, drinks, and desserts, but on our September 2025 visit, multiple items were unavailable pending a substantial revision. Cajun dishes and ribeye pho were set to join the menu, while items such as banh mi sandwiches, ha cao shrimp dumplings, banh khot, and banh xeo were all apparently set to be removed in favor of new choices. We ordered around them, and weren’t terribly impressed with the results.

Our meal’s arguable highlight was a set of four fried cha gio egg rolls ($7), which were pretty average by local standards – crispy, hot, and served with lettuce, herbs, and sweet fish sauce. Their only issue was the presence of a couple of long human hairs on the lettuce wrap plate. Three unfried sausage-egg-jicama bo bia rolls ($7) were larger but less wonderfully flavored than THH’s versions, but served with a nice peanut and shallot dip to boost their impact.

A plate of garlic noodles with small pieces of tender shaken beef ($15) failed to thrill with either of its key ingredients, except when punched up with an accompanying sauce, while bun rieu soup ($15) was only modestly more tasty than a bowl of hot water, with plain thin vermicelli, tofu, and meatball pieces that were all pretty bland.

Food R Drink’s location isn’t great, either. Only modestly better than a hole-in-the-wall despite its youth, it sits in the sort of worn-down plaza where a pushy panhandler can accost visitors without consequences. On the other hand, the food here is fairly inexpensive, so if you’re not turned off by the occasional hair in your food, absent menu items, or so-so flavors… you may have a better experience than we did.
