Flor de Oaxaca

The "flower of Oaxaca" offers somewhat barren renditions of regional Mexican favorites

In a region where some restaurants are great, others are okay, and still others are bad, simply being good isn’t easy, and it’s much better than being forgettable or terrible. That’s the story with Flor de Oaxaca in Santa Ana: It’s a Mexican restaurant serving Oaxacan specialties that tend to taste good, balancing initially appealing pricing with relatively small portions, then doing the bare minimum when plating.

One of the big draws for us was the opportunity to order chapulines (traditionally prepared grasshoppers), which when used effectively (as at Oyamel) can become the core protein in surprisingly incredible tacos. Here, they’re on the menu as an appetizer and arrive in a bowl with a spoon, which is definitely the least interesting way we’ve ever seen them offered for consumption in a restaurant – more like the way they’re sold in mercados. We technically got what we ordered, but like other dishes, less than we hoped for. Look deeper on the menu and you’ll find that they can also be had mixed into guacamole, inside quesadillas, or on top of tlayudas, any of which would be a better idea than ordering the standard appetizer.

The story was the same with Oaxacan molés, which span black, red, and yellow versions here, each offered with chicken. As you can guess from the photos, yes, they’re moles, yes, that’s chicken, and yes, they all tasted pretty much as expected – not super thick but complex enough, one more chocolatey than peppery, the others more peppery and meaty than sweet. Ditto on a shrimp ceviche, which included the expected shellfish, onions, tomatoes, at least a half avocado, and some saltines, but was on the dry side. Again, it was technically fine, just not special in any way.

Even though we were drawn in by specific menu items and appealing pricing – almost every entree is under $20, save for a collection of large, made-to-be-shared samplers – we haven’t returned to Flor de Oaxada for a second visit, and at this point, aren’t planning to do so. But we’re glad it exists and is making some of our favorite Mexican foods available locally at reasonable prices. If it evolves, we’d consider coming back to try our luck again.
