Chill Coffee
In Westminster, a new Vietnamese coffee and matcha tea shop offers an extra boost to caffeine lovers
Even if Westminster’s Bolsa Avenue didn’t have the Asian Garden Mall, the neighborhood’s collection of largely Vietnamese and Chinese food and drink businesses would be locally unparalleled: Noteworthy dim sum parlor Seafood Cove 2 is right across the street in the Asian Village shopping center, which is also home to a half-dozen Vietnamese restaurants and a supermarket. Flagging Taiwanese boba chain Presotea maintained a ground floor location below Seafood Cove 2 for years, closing in 2025 and giving way to Chill Coffee in late August. Not to be confused with Garden Grove’s Chillà Coffee, which opened at roughly the same time, Chill offers Vietnamese phin coffees and Japanese matcha teas, milkless fruit teas, several milk teas, and smoothies, all priced from $5 to $7.
Although Chill and Chillà overlap somewhat in drink offerings, Chill doesn’t serve any food items, and its collection of drinks is both larger and bolstered substantially by toppings – coffee and matcha drinks can be topped with egg, salty, matcha, and ube creams, plus vanilla cold foam, banana, pandan, and bac xiu marble milks. Thai and green Thai teas, lychee, strawberry, kumquat, and tropical teas, with avocado and strawberry smoothies also available. One unique menu feature is a promise of “unlimited extra shot of coffee – no charge,” which we haven’t seen anywhere else in the area, and may make Chill a hit with those needing extra caffeine. Several types of boba, jellies, and pudding can also be added to drinks for $1 or less.
The drinks we ordered were a mixed bag, with the Vietnamese egg cream coffee ($6.50) standing out as the best of the bunch: strong phin drip coffee with a custardy egg creme brulee topping that smelled vaguely of popcorn, a scent that disappeared as the cream was mixed into the coffee. But that popcorn smell so dominated a Thai green milk tea ($5) with added egg cream ($1) that the tea’s signature sweet-and-bitter flavor combination wasn’t at all evident, making that custom drink seem like a complete misfire. Last but not least, a strawberry tea ($5.50) with added crystal boba ($0.85) was totally fine – not a standout on flavor.
Our impressions of Chill were a little better than neutral, somewhat similar to the Presotea it replaced, so we’re not sure if we’ll return in the future. The strongest positives were the friendly service and fairly affordable pricing, offset by the cafe’s location in a popular plaza where parking can be challenging. If we come back, we’ll update this article with further impressions.
