Blackmarket Bakery
Decidedly American pastries and sandwiches, in Costa Mesa and beyond
Founded in Orange County at The Camp in Costa Mesa – and with two additional locations in San Diego and Oceanside – Blackmarket Bakery specialized in cookies and pastries that were named, flavored, and decorated with an distinctively American attitude. Everything was originally made and served fresh daily, so items were available only until they sell out.
From twice-baked almond croissants to multi-brown-toned, flourless chocolate walnut mudslide cookies, the energy here was “make it delicious, calories be damned.” To that end, sweet recipes unapologetically included butter, extra chocolatey chocolate (in a “total eclipse” cake), and molasses, while a collection of sandwiches commonly used toasted Dutch crunch, croissants, or brioche as bread.
Across two visits to the Costa Mesa store, we tried a handful of items – chocolate-nutella croissants, cookies, a chocolate mousse/raspberry tart, and more – each time enjoying the flavors, presentation, and overall energy a lot. In addition to their pastries and sandwiches, breakfast burritos, hot and cold drinks, and full-sized cakes (pre-ordered) are available for purchase, and there was a small dining room with enough seating for perhaps two dozen people, plus several magnetic phrase-building boards for entertainment. Following reported overexpansion and a drop in quality, Blackmarket Bakery’s OC and Oceanside locations closed in August 2025.
