Bien Hen Seafood & Lau

In Westminster, a budget-friendly place to sample Vietnamese-style exotic meats and seafood

At one point, Bien Hen Seafood & Lau struck us and others as an appealing alternative to Oc & Lau, a popular Vietnamese seafood and hot pot chain which at that time was dealing with frustratingly long lines at both of its locations. After those bottlenecks went away, people began asking whether it was still worth visiting Bien Hen, and our answer is “yes!”

As another example of Orange County’s increasingly amazing Vietnamese seafood and exotic meats scene, Bien Hen offers its own sprawling menu of exotic and semi-exotic proteins, ranging from venison, wild boar, veal, goat, eel, and frog to fish, squid, quail, chicken, beef, and a wide variety of shellfish. In addition to sizzling plates, soups, salads, “gruel,” and lau – hot pots – are offered across many of the meats, as are a small number of deep-fried appetizers. Snails aren’t as much of a draw here as at Oc & Lau, but there are some on the menu.

In the course of just one meal, we flipped between plates of razor clams with green onions, eel in curry sauce, spicy seasoned grilled squid, grilled goat, and shaken beef.

On another visit, we tried and enjoyed the razor clams, adult hand-sized grilled spicy seasoned giant prawns, scalding hot grilled blood cockles with buttered green onions, Mi Xao Gion (stir fried crispy egg noodles with mixed seafood and beef), surprisingly delicious five-spice grilled deer, and curry wild boar with crackers. Everything tasted good, at very reasonable prices: almost every entree is in the $15 to $18 range, except for hot pots ($30 to $50).

While we skipped the frog and veal dishes, we would gladly come back to give them a shot. The great part of Bien Hen is that you can experience all of these meats without simply ordering everything on plain skewers – a limitation of one-time local exotic meat rival CTB Eatery – and there are plenty of more conventional Vietnamese choices for the less adventurous. We would recommend Bien Hen to anyone interested in exploring some of Vietnamese cuisine’s less widely known delights, particularly on a budget.
