Assal Pastry

A small but mighty Irvine bakery packed with Persian sweets (and more)

For decades, Assal Pastry has been one of Irvine’s best bakeries – a small and sometimes cramped source of Persian pastries, including baklava, zoolbia and bamieh, as well as French classics such as Napoleons, cream cones and fruit tarts. Expect Middle Eastern flavors such as honey, pistachio, saffron, and rosewater to distinguish the light, delicate, and delicious pastries from American and Asian bakeries. Traditional American cakes, various types of cookies, and nuts are also sold here.

While Assal has changed little over the years, the Heritage Plaza was resculpted around it; former Persian supermarket neighbor Super Irvine was unceremoniously closed and replaced by Tokyo Central. Now that construction has been completed, Assal stands out even more from its neighbors as the only option for Middle Eastern treats in the immediate neighborhood; nearby options include Chinese/Taiwanese hot pot restaurants and sushi spot Waka Sakura.
