An Vat OC
Authentic Vietnamese street foods and snacks in the heart of Little Saigon
An Vat OC (also known as Nhung Huynh – Ăn Vặt OC) is unlike any other Vietnamese restaurant we’ve visited in Orange County – a small but beautifully decorated snack shop specializing in all sorts of Vietnamese street foods that aren’t easily found elsewhere, including banh trang tron (rice paper salad), deep fried or unfried red rice paper rolls, and soft rice rolls with shredded pork.
Made with tissue paper-thin, professional-grade shredded rice paper, the banh trang tron is easier to eat than the version at Garlic & Chives, and roughly as tasty. Virtually everything sold here is served in takeout containers, and seating inside is minimal and small – uncomfortable, generally – evoking the humble hospitality of Vietnamese food stalls.
Beyond the salad, we also enjoyed their drinks, including boba, pandan milk, and passion fruit teas. That said, many of the items here are acquired tastes and/or liberally covered in creamy sauces, which looked better than they tasted to us.
One note for those who may be intrigued by An Vat OC: much of the menu is in Vietnamese, and only some items have small-lettered English translations or drawings (not photos) to help facilitate orders. If you don’t know Vietnamese, we recommend that you either research the menu online with Yelp prior to a visit, or come with someone who reads the language and can help you navigate the dishes from personal experience.
