Golden Trays

In Westminster, a decades-old Vietnamese bakery and restaurant reboots with morning dim sum and more

Kang Lac operated as a Vietnamese-Chinese bakery and restaurant for over 20 years in the corner space of a small Westminster plaza, but apart from its Yelp page, its digital paper trail begins and ends with health department citations – the latter seemingly the last straw before it closed for good in March 2026. Several months later, Golden Trays took over, rebooted, and hopefully fumigated the space, preserving most of Kang Lac’s menus (and even their packaging) while improving the service experience, which reportedly waned in its latter days.

When we visited in August 2026, Golden Trays offered an overwhelming number of Vietnamese-Chinese baked goods – inexpensive, individually wrapped breads made with pork floss, custard, BBQ pork, taro, or sesame – as well as a “to-go” table with inexpensive, pre-packaged Vietnamese soups, Vietnamese-Chinese congees, noodles, and fried rice. For those who thought the days of $8 bun bo hue or beef chow fun were gone, Golden Trays offers both (as well as many other items at $7 to $8 price points), and will even toss in a free custard or taro bun if you buy three to-go boxes. Flaky baked chicken pastries ($3), crispy cha gio egg roll sets ($8), and a handful of steamed or fried dim sum items (each $5.50) are in “warming showcases,” with $5 cookies and $2.50 to $12 cakes sitting besides $6 pandan, pennyworth, and (especially excellent, intensely flavored) passionfruit drinks in separate displays. All of these items precede the aforementioned Kang Lac menus, which add several pages of freshly made rice, soup, noodle, and drink options.

Worth an extra note: Everyone working in Golden Trays was helpful, attentive, and friendly from the moment we arrived. Better yet, our meal started with complimentary sesame bread and ended with small slices of pandan cake, both of which were unexpected. We were generally happy with the rest of our meal, but these added touches made the experience even better.

Everything we tried on the baked goods side was a hit: banh kep rolled pandan-sesame waffle cookies ($5/5), pate chaud ga ($3 each) baked chicken pastries, and the aforementioned sesame bread and pandan cake were all delicious, thanks to atypically strong flavors and obviously fresh baking. We were also impressed by Golden Trays’ recently added central Vietnamese dishes, banh it ram ($15/6) and banh beo ($13/8), each impressively garnished with fresh toppings, unusually generous in their base rice and fillings, and mixing crispy and soft elements to textural perfection. While they were each a little underseasoned – a pinch of salt would have helped – included fish sauce improved their flavors.

The only “meh” item we had at Golden Trays was its rendition of the classic mi xao dish, a house special version still branded “kang lac.” For $18.50 – common pricing for the restaurant’s entrees – the plate was somewhat underwhelmingly built with two pieces each of fish balls, shrimp, and pork kidney, plus four or five pieces each of beef, full-stem broccoli, cabbage, and sliced carrots, atop a bed of crispy egg noodles. While it looks pretty great in our photos, most of the meats were overcooked and chewy, undermining the lightly garlicky sauce, fresh broccoli, and fine noodles. We wouldn’t order it again.

Overall, we’d call Golden Trays a pretty solid restaurant, particularly given its generally aggressive pricing. We’d consider revisiting in the future, but would lean heavier on baked goods and drinks than anything on the entree side.
