Atrà Cafe

In a flourishing Fountain Valley plaza, a small cafe with really good matcha and coffee drinks

Fountain Valley’s food scene has continued to improve by leaps and bounds over the past few years thanks to both local entrepreneurs (see: Kei Concepts) and chains – a microcosm of which can be found right off the 405 at the intersection of Brookhurst and Talbert. One plaza is now home to locally owned CIR Lounge and Sushi Koto, regional pizza chain Slice House, Singaporean soup shop Le Shrimp Noodle Bar, and others, notably including the small but tastefully appointed Atrà Cafe.

Roughly a year old as of our mid-2025 visit, Atrà is a Vietnamese-focused, Japanese-influenced coffee and tea shop that stays almost exclusively in that lane. Coffees are generally topped with cold foams ranging from banana to coconut, corn, egg, salted, matcha, pandan, or ube; teas can be had with some of those foams, or with fruit purees (longan, lychee, mango, passion fruit, peach, pineapple, or strawberry). There’s also a single fruit drink without tea, available seasonally: coconut water and pureed pineapple, served iced. Each drink is in the $5.25 to $8 range – most around $6.50 – and come in either 16- or 20-ounce sizes, with optional sweetness and ice adjustments.

Apart from a display at the counter with trendy Labubus, the cafe isn’t trying to sell anything but drinks; there are no pastries, sandwiches, popcorn chicken, or other food items here. In other words, come for coffee, tea, or that one coconut/pineapple drink, or don’t come at all.

We ordered two of our testing favorites from their short menu – a classic Vietnamese-style Egg Coffee ($6.75), and a Double Matcha ($8.25) where a matcha latte is topped with a matcha cream foam. Each of the drinks was dusted to add to the base coffee or tea flavor, and contained a significant enough dollop of cream to coat the (reasonable) ice cubes after the liquids were finished. Importantly, we didn’t want either the coffee or the tea to end: Each drink was strong enough to balance out its cream top, and sweet without reaching cloying levels. These aren’t cheap drinks, and didn’t taste cheap, either.

Atrà has a relatively small dining area, but it’s clean, modern, and offers Wi-Fi access to guests. Apart from conversation noise, this is a great place to sit down and enjoy a drink while reading or studying – or after a meal at one of Atrà’s neighbors. We’d certainly revisit in the future and sample more of the menu.
