Milly’s Basket

In Stanton, Rodeo 39 Public Market's latest donut shop is small and intermittently staffed

The first dedicated donut shop in Stanton’s Rodeo 39 Public Market was Dot & Dough, the second location of a Monterey Park shop that sold Hawaiian mochi donuts, malasadas, and Simpsons-inspired “Homer” donuts with colorful sprinkles. A semi-new shop called Milly’s Basket replaced it in September 2024, preserving some of the donuts and introducing trendier replacements for others, but between intermittent staffing and inconsistent freshness, we can’t recommend it.

Milly’s Basket has offered everything from wheel-style croissants with ube filling, Dossant croissant-donuts, and maple bars to Dubai chocolate donuts, Korean-style “French cream” donuts, and slices of what look like store-bought cake – triple chocolate, matcha cheesecake, and others. On our first visit, we were so surprised by the tiny shop’s wide variation in donut and cake styles that we felt compelled to ask whether everything was made in-house, and although we were dubious, the official answer was “yes.”

As of June 2025, the collection has been cut back: The bars, croissants, and doissants are gone, though there are still Dubai chocolate and French cream versions, as well as creme brulee and S’mores donuts, plus a handful of so-so-looking, top-glazed mochi donut flavors. Multiple cake slices, all looking store-bought, were also individually wrapped in a display case above Korean fruit milks, Coke cans, and Starbucks bottled coffees.

The first time we tried a donut here – the Dubai Chocolate one – we were seriously impressed: after one bite, we discovered it wasn’t just chocolate and pistachio-topped, but also filled with chocolate, pistachio, and kataifi, enough to really balance out the soft donut dough and crispy kataifi pastry with sweet and nutty creams. We liked it enough to return weeks later and try again, only this time, the donut was so hard that (although it certainly wasn’t), it might as well have been sitting in the display case since our prior visit. This one, we had to toss out without finishing it. Based on other reports online, our experiences here aren’t isolated.

On subsequent visits, we’ve never seen anyone actually staffing Milly’s – and other Rodeo vendors have disappeared or relocated from the same side of the hall, including Bestea, Capas, and Crepes Avenue. That said, a “ring the bell for assistant” sign and partially filled display cases suggest that it’s still at least partially operating, should you want to give it a try.
