Crafted Cone Ice Cream & Desserts
High-quality homemade ice cream from a family-owned shop on the edge of Yorba Linda and Placentia
Northern Orange County has become one of the region’s top destinations for homemade, high-quality ice cream – especially if one appreciates twists on traditional American flavors. Located at the edge of Yorba Linda and Placentia, Crafted Cone Ice Cream and Desserts follows in the footsteps of nearby Blue Scoop Creamery, Bruster’s, and Handel’s by offering a large collection of scooped ice creams in cups ($4.50-$8.25) or cones (+$1.50), while embracing the Mexican paleta trend from La Michoacana and Tocumbo with a collection of ice cream popsicles ($5 each).
One major Crafted Cone draw is that the scooped and popsicle flavors are substantially different. You can choose popsicles in novel flavors like Cinnamon Bun, New York Coffee Shop (coffee and glazed donut), Cookie Monster (embedded with full chocolate chip and Oreo cookies), Oatmeal Raising, and Apple Pie; there are even pumpkin/banana and blueberry yogurt “Pawpsicles” for dogs, each in the shape of an oversized paw. Ice cream flavors range from basic (Cookie Dough, Cookies ‘N Cream, Birthday Cake Bash) to more distinctive (PB Monster, Chocolate-Covered Strawberries, Creamy Horchata) and candy- or cookie-filled (Twix Fix, Ferraro Rocher, Biscoff Cookie Butter). Sundae toppings are available, as are trendy Dubai chocolate strawberries at an eye-watering price of $18 per cup.
Thankfully, the ice cream portion sizes feel generous by current post-inflation standards, as the two “double” cups we ordered each had three flavors – two large half-scoops and a big full scoop – that were collectively as filling as pricier three-scoop portions at other handmade ice cream shops such as McConnell’s. The Crafted Cone flavors we tried were almost all hits, though some were stronger than others: We loved a heavily java-flavored Coffee Bean Bliss, found tons of Oreos (but little English toffee) in the English Toffee and Oreos flavor, and enjoyed caramelly/cookie-like Twix flavors (though too little candy) in Twix Fix. Intense strawberries were the star of Chocolate Covered Strawberries, Rocky Road was strong in chocolate and soft marshmallows, and PB Monster was powerfully loaded with peanut butter flavors from cookie dough and cups. A nice dollop of hot fudge only helped.
Crafted Cone’s friendly service and nice, clean seating area were also welcome, making the entire experience positive from beginning to end. Though this young ice cream shop has plenty of competition nearby, it’s certainly worth visiting, and we’d consider coming back to sample more flavors in the future.
