Che Vi

In Garden Grove's Mall of Fortune, a Vietnamese gelato shop is replaced by a vendor of che dessert cups

As of the end of December 2024, Garden Grove’s Vietnamese gelato shop Mmm… Gelato & More (later rebranded as KEM) closed, giving way to a new and somewhat less distinctive dessert space, Che Vi. Although the branding and signage are so professional that the new business looks like it could be part of a chain, the Mall of Fortune location appears to be a one-off – and without some changes, probably will not spawn additional shops here.

Window posters and videos on Che Vi’s website advertise what appear to be large bowls filled with sweet milk, tofu, puddings, fruits, and jellies, but as we discovered when ordering the “Coconut Special” – an $8 item said to be one of their two most popular items – what you’ll actually receive will be plastic cups filled with mixed-up ingredients and ice, so you can assemble a bowl-like che yourself. We’re not the only ones who have experienced this at Che Vi, and nearly six months after the first complaints, those marketing materials are still up, giving visitors an inaccurate sense of what they’ll get when they order.  Beyond its lack of presentation appeal, this DIY approach leaves guests to pour, spill, and drop bits of their desserts, further reducing the sense of value for the prices.

On a positive note, the ingredients are totally fine, including options such as mango, avocado, tofu, flan, and taro puddings, and toppings ranging from pandan, coconut, and grass jellies to chestnut popping pearls, crystal boba pearls, and chewy ube balls. Aside from the assembly, there was nothing wrong with our cup of sweet coconut milk and its jellies, which were augmented with a nice dollop of flan and ube balls, though there also wasn’t anything that made this version stand out from che desserts found elsewhere in the area.

Thanks to both its somewhat locally distinctive flavors and its presentation, KEM was a standout in this space; Che Vi has a way to go before it’s at that level. As much as we like the style of its marketing materials, they could really use an update to properly reflect the actual sizes and looks of the desserts here – better yet, the desserts should be improved to look like what’s advertised.
