Do Coffee

In Brea, a coffee, matcha, and pastry concept from the team behind Omomo Tea Shoppe

We have described Omomo Tea Shoppe as a small chain with a “cult-like following,” and though it has expanded and contracted in recent years – losing one of its Irvine locations – it’s currently in expansion mode. In addition to opening an Omomo in Brea, the boba chain recently opened a second concept called Do Coffee with its own collection of drinks. Pronounced “doe,” Do references a Chinese word for temperature, explaining that this “is the key to unlocking aromas and nuances within each coffee bean.” And despite their common heritage, the shops are almost completely different in execution: Do actually offers indoor seating, a collection of pastries, and your choice of hot or cold coffee drinks, opening earlier in the morning and not (as yet) showing signs of Omomo-style waiting lines.

That might have something to do with the early pricing. Soon after opening in Feburary 2025, an early Do menu showed pour-over prices as high as $15 for a cup of Colombian coffee – one of those facially insane small business decisions that we weren’t surprised to see “fixed” on our visit in April, as pour-overs now instead range from $9 to $11. We found regular hot coffee drinks starting at $3.50 (Espresso shot) and climb ingto $6.50 for a Belgian Mocha, with most other drinks in the $6-7 range. Matcha lattes ($6), matcha vanilla einspanners ($7), and loose leaf tea ($5) are available for those not interested in coffee, with seven types of pastries going for $5 each.

All of the drinks we ordered were okay to pretty good. Perhaps the best of the bunch was a Yuzu Cold Drip, which used a yuzu puree foam to more impressively balance citrus and black coffee flavors than many similar versions we’ve tried elsewhere. We were also generally pleased with the Matcha Vanilla Einspanner, which combined strong Japanese green tea with milk and a frothy vanilla cold foam – all nice textures and flavors. By contrast, a Sea Salt Toffee Latte didn’t have much obvious toffee flavor and needed additional sweetener to dial up to “acceptable,” while the Belgian Mocha was similarly light on its promised dark chocolate flavor. Two pastries, a cinnamon roll and chocolate chip cookie, were reheated using a Balmuda water vapor toaster, but still tasted like they were being resuscitated rather than freshly baked.

Our first impressions of Do Coffee’s drinks and snacks weren’t fantastic, and we wouldn’t trek out to Brea to re-experience them. But if something significant changes, or additional locations open, we might give Do another chance in the future.
