Paseo

The highest-end of three recent Disneyland Mexican restaurants is better than OK

Superb elevated Mexican cuisine became harder to find locally with the closure of Orange County’s best high-end Mexican restaurants, Maizano and Taco Maria, in different parts of Costa Mesa: The former was unparalleled in its mastery of corn as a conceptual base and myriad Mexican ingredients ranging from individual spices and herbs to complex moles and tasting menu-caliber presentations; the latter won a Michelin star for its combination of premium recipes and plating. If you’re visiting Disneyland and want the closest approximation to these experiences one can get without leaving the Anaheim campus or traveling significantly north or south of Orange County, Paseo should be your choice.

Opened as the flagship in a trio of commonly owned Mexican restaurants (also Céntrico and Tiendita) at Downtown Disneyland, Paseo has an ambitious menu loaded with beautifully plated seafood, intriguing cocktails, and some land-based favorites. As appetizers, there’s roasted octopus with salsa, a crispy tlayuda with sausage, pork belly, cured meat, vegetables, and cheese, and mussels in a saffron white cream sauce. Fish, shrimp, pork shanks, lamb barbacoa, and steak are available as entrees.

Both those menu choices and their execution are halfway between the bona fide excellent Maizano and the area’s old school Mexican-American El Torito Grill. Dishes arrive looking a step or two better than they taste, which is to say “pretty good” and “okay” – a huge step up from most cafeteria-quality Disney fare, but not spectacular by the standards of top local Mexican chefs. Desserts including mimetic corn (“Maiz”) and cocoa bean (“Cacao”) are the best reason to visit now, in our view, though they were again better looking than they tasted.

Having visited shortly after Paseo opened in 2024, we opted to hold off on returning to give the management time to remedy serious early service issues and polish the savory flavors. Despite giving off all the pretense of aiming for Michelin-class performance, both fell well short of award worthiness, despite prices that may have visitors seeing stars. We were more impressed by Céntrico, located immediately outside Paseo, which in our view offered a superior overall experience at less eye-watering prices.
