Taqueria el Zamorano

At this affordable Santa Ana taqueria, expect homemade tortillas and large quantities of tasty meat

While we’re not going to claim to be experts on Taqueria El Zamorano, we’ve had their Mexican food twice – three years apart – once sitting outside the Santa Ana restaurant, and another time as takeout as home. Open six days a week during breakfast and lunch hours, this small, family-owned taco shop produces legitimately very good homemade tortillas, carnitas, and el pastor, having operated from 1997-2005, closed, then reopened for a decade starting in 2014.

Currently priced at $3.50 to $3.75 each, El Zamorano’s carne asada, al pastor, birria, and fried shrimp tacos were all loaded with quality protein and hit the spot. A roughly $13 combination plate, bistec ranchero, included more than enough tasty steak, fried potatoes, sweet cooked onions, and salsa to make three full tacos.

The only down side to ordering from Taqueria El Zamorano is that their homemade tortillas don’t travel well, or at least didn’t for us, and were falling apart by the time they arrived at home. We’d recommend eating at the restaurant if possible for the full experience.
