In Tustin, beautiful brunches with your choice of healthy or unhealthy, boozy or non-alcoholic paths
Across multiple visits to Toast Kitchen & Bakery in Costa Mesa and Tustin, we’ve long felt that these small restaurants had established themselves as among the area’s best brunch spots – easier to love and more focused than its larger sister restaurant Tableau (since closed) at South Coast Plaza. From their original cute Instagram handle @toastamesa to their impressive plating, seasoning, and drink games, Toast somehow hit the trifecta of appealing to millennials, day drinking parents, and a broader audience of foodies without turning anyone off.
One of their hits is a particularly strong rendition of chicken and waffles, which is available in three variants including a compelling but not insane Nashville Hot. They’ve also routinely delivered some of the most beautiful and delicious acai bowls we’ve found anywhere, stunning ube French toast, and other variants ranging from Thai tea / black sesame French toast to avocado toast. These and other menu items are consistently much better than basic.
While their list of cocktails will instantly appeal to pretty much anyone with a love of boozy brunches – flavored champagne flights, tons of fruity drinks, and a couple of hangover cures – their non-alcoholic drinks are uneven. Ginger peach and passion fruit lavender sodas sound better than they taste, not necessarily mixing their layers even when stirred, and strawberry green tea is weakly flavored. Their lattes, however, are quite nice, and set the stage for Tableau’s closeup-worthy hot drinks.
Toast’s Costa Mesa space closed at the end of 2025 and rebooted as Nosh under some of the same ownership; it had bad parking in an iffy plaza, but looked nice inside and out. Tustin’s Toast still exists with good parking in a clean plaza, but the space is more industrial and less fun. Our recommendation is to stop by, order an acai bowl and a drink, then thank us later.
