Toko Rame Indonesian Restaurant

Just outside of Orange County, a well-established Indonesian restaurant with mid-quality food

Continuing our quest to find a great Indonesian restaurant in or near Orange County, we traveled to Bellflower in southeast LA County, only a couple cities past Stanton and Buena Park, to visit Toko Rame. This small (five-table) Indonesian restaurant caught our attention with a substantial menu spanning classic appetizers, entrees, and shaved ice desserts, but the overall experience was pretty much the definition of “mid.”

The best thing we ordered was the Nasi Bungkus, which held delicious beef rendang, OK fried chicken, fine vegetable curry. and rice inside a single banana leaf wrapper. Sumatran beef curry (Gulai Cincang) approached good on our scale, but fatty meat and thin sauce detracted from the spicy flavor.

Unfortunately, none of the other dishes stood out: Indonesian yellow curry (Gulai Ayam) was bland, a chicken/lamb/beef sate plate was mostly overcooked, and the Toko Rame Special Noodles were Chinese takeout lo mein-quality.

The other major issue here was a roughly 45-minute wait from the time we ordered to the first arrival of any food. We’re always willing to wait a while for excellent food to be cooked, but when it’s unimpressive, the only thing worse than bland food is the realization that we wasted time that could have been better spent elsewhere, inside or outside of Orange County.
