Himalayan Taste
A menu of mostly Indian dishes provides too little opportunity to sample actual Tibetan flavors
As we’ve mentioned in articles covering Himalayan restaurants in Orange County, there are differences between places that call themselves and actually are Himalayan, restaurants that call themselves Indian but actually have Himalayan food, and ones that call themselves Himalayan but are really almost entirely Indian. Himalayan Taste falls into the latter category, offering a menu that’s all but identical to the one you’d find in any Indian restaurant, with the addition of a handful of Himalayan items, including (typically forgettable) momo dumplings.
If you’re looking to try what’s distinctive about Nepalese cuisine, you won’t find much of it here. Experienced elsewhere, it tends to be more than the sum of its Chinese and Indian parts, with pices, sauces, and techniques that fuse those cultures together: rice bread rings, thukpa soups, yak meat and cheese, semolina desserts, unique pickles, and other fermented vegetables. None of those items are found here, so if you visit, you’ll find there’s nothing wrong with the food – it’s all competent – but you’ll be most satisfied if you arrive expecting more Indian tastes than Himalayan ones.
