Huong Hue

In Little Saigon, Central Vietnamese food by the party tray, or perhaps in smaller quantities

One of the best things about living near Orange County’s Little Saigon is the opportunity to explore Central Vietnamese cuisine – sometimes known as Hue cuisine, named for the major city in Vietnam – at multiple restaurants. Huong Hue (“Hue Flavor”) is one of an increasing number of restaurants serving Central Vietnamese food, and though it’s a good place to find lots of Hue items, we’d say it’s generally not the best place to sample any of them.

Despite a handful of tables and a pretty nice (though small) dining room, Huong Hue appears to primarily be a to-go restaurant serving food by the bulk tray – signage suggests that it’s intended more as a place to get 70 or 100 spring rolls than two or four. But there is a menu with everything priced for individual consumption, and prices are reasonable.

Almost all of the items we tried, from translucent Banh Bot Loc tapioca shrimp and pork dumplings and Banh It Ram soft and fried dumplings to Banh Cuon rice rolls, were solid but not great at Huong Hue. Mi Quang, a bright yellow egg noodle soup, was an exception thanks to tender pork and tons of other proteins in the bowl. It wasn’t enough to make us want to return for another lunch or dinner visit, but if we were hosting a party with a need for large numbers of these items, we’d know who to call.
